The origin of
“Warabi-mochi”
The history of “Warabi-mochi” is indisputably ancient, dating back to the Heian period (around 900 AD). It is widely believed that Emperor Daigo was particularly fond of “Warabi-mochi” .
The raw material, bracken flour, which is the origin of the name, was very expensive, so bracken cakes were a confectionery eaten by high-ranking aristocrats. The "dim sum culture" and "tea ceremony manners" brought from China along with Zen Buddhism led to the evolution of the present-day “Warabi-mochi” around 1180.Nara Prefecture is renowned for its straw flour, and “Warabi-mochi” was a staple in Nara and Kyoto. As the "dim sum culture" and "tea ceremony etiquette" became more refined, “Warabi-mochi” also became more sophisticated, and it came to be valued as a high-class tea cake.
The tradition of “Warabi-mochi” lives on to this day.
